About Me

I'm Megan Lange, a creative and technical writer located in Saint Paul, MN. I am a graduate from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities where I received my B.S. in Technical Writing and Communication with a minor in Creative Writing. My creative focus is fiction writing, both speculative and realistic.

I started this website to track my journey as a creative writer.  Though my profession is technical writing, creative writing is my passion. My favorite thing about writing is building connections and collaborating with other creative people, so please reach out!

Check out my work on the Portfolio page or see where my stories have been published before on the Featured Works page. I love hearing from other writers and readers so please send feedback and business inquiries by filling out the form on the Contact Me page or email me at meganlange@eatbookswriting.com

Currently Writing: CRAFT First Chapters Contest 2023

When I first started this website, I was doing NaNoWriMo for the second time (this time focusing on completing a work, rather than reaching the word count as I had in 2020). Now, I am putting some blood, sweat, and tears into editing the first chapters of that experience for competition. I was so scarred after NaNo 2021 I honestly had trouble getting back into that story, but focusing only on the first 5000 words has been a pleasure and I think I will continue editing it in chunks to avoid burnout.

Currently Writing: The Moth Short Story Prize Entry 2023

I am super excited to learn Ottessa Moshfegh will be judging the Moth Short Story Prize this year, and I'm thrilled to submit my piece "Dragon." Obviously, since it will be in submission, I can't post it here, but I am so proud of how it came together. It felt great to conceive, draft, edit, and complete a short story for competition for the first time in so long. Also, it finally gave me an excuse to pick up a copy of "Homesick for Another World."

Currently Writing: Nothing! Submitting for the Masters Review Reprint Prize

Well, the New Year's writing schedule didn't exactly work out. I took a huge break for the first half of this year, a choice that has had some pros and cons. I stopped writing daily, and am having trouble getting back into the habit. Despite writing less total, I find more pleasure in the writing I have been doing and am getting back into the swing. Maybe after four years, it was time to focus more on quality over quantity.

Currently Writing: New Year's Writing Schedule

Finding time to write has been so difficult over the last year and every time I had time I always felt like I was panicking about which project to give my attention to. This year I am maintaining my 300 daily word count, but on top of that, I have developed a weekly schedule. Each week of the month I have dedicated to a different project with a set of two or three goals related to said project. Hopefully, this will keep me more focused when I do have the time to write.

Inspirational Words

A writer should do whatever she wants. If she wants to make money, she should do it. If she wants to spend a year in the woods confronting herself and nature, she should do that. Do whatever teaches you the most about yourself and your work. Go where you are least comfortable. You might find new shit to eat there.

Currently Writing: New Reedsy Prompt #160

A return to Reedsy! I haven't entered a prompt contest since last fall, but I had some extra time today while road-tripping. The most serious writing I've had time to do in a few months and it really shows. It may not be my best work, but it felt good to get back into it.

Currently Writing: Editing Critiqued Works

Finally getting around to editing some of the work I got critiqued a few months back. Summer is busy, hopefully, the cold weather will come with more time to focus on writing. I don't have any projects currently under review which is too bad, because there's nothing to look forward to. I need to be better at submitting widely.

Currently Writing: Collaborative Creative Exercises

I've been doing some creative exercises with internet friends. Not much comes of it, but it keeps me creative even when I don't have time to do anything more substantial.

Currently Writing: Anything

I use to kind of think that writer's block wasn't real. Like you can always write something, but lately, I have been really struggling to find my creative voice. Growing up is hard. Changing is hard. I'm trying to get back to my old daily writing goal of 300 words at a minimum while still aiming for 500. I think I'm going to try writing in the morning before work.

Inspirational Words

If you can write one short story a week—it doesn't matter what the quality is to start, but at least you're practicing, and at the end of the year you have 52 short stories, and I defy you to write 52 bad ones. Can't be done.

Currently Writing: Small Paid Project

I finally received the editorial feedback I requested from the Master's Review. Even though my story was not accepted, I still found the feedback very useful and informative. I'm looking forward to editing my piece and maybe submitting it elsewhere, but I have some other irons in the fire I need to take care of first.

Currently Writing: Fractured Lit's "Ghost, Fable, and Fairy Tales Prize" Submission

Flash Fiction is hard! Why didn't anyone tell me how kneecapping a 1000-word limit is? I wouldn't have even considered trying my hand at it, but the "Ghost, Fable, and Fairy Tales" prompt is pretty impossible to resist.

Currently Writing: The Masters Review Anthology XI Submission

I am hoping to add something new to the "Short Stories" page on this website soon. I like to submit stories for publication though and sadly until I know whether or not they will be selected I can't publish them anywhere, even here. Once a story has been accepted for publication (or if they get rejected enough times and I give up) this site will be its forever home.

Currently Writing: Revising NaNoWriMo

My grown-up job has unfortunately prevented me from writing as much as I would like to lately. With some fear, I have tried to revisit NaNoWriMo. It is daunting but necessary, and I always feel more kindly about a draft of anything after setting it aside for a while. I am also channeling some day-t0-day frustration toward a new short story which is coming along shockingly well.

Currently Writing: The Masters Review Winter Short Story Award Submission

I haven't had a serious writing weekend in a long time and I really put some (figurative) ink to paper over the last couple of days. I wrangled a work that I've been fighting with for a long time and I'm really proud to have finally finished it. I submitted it to The Masters Review Winter Short Story contest and also for editorial review. It will be the first time in a while I've had my work reviewed by an editorial team so I'm super excited to hear back from them.

You might not write well every day, but you can always edit a bad page. You can't edit a blank page.

Currently Writing: Short Story Starters

I'm setting up some story starters I can return to throughout the year. "Dream Weaver" originated from a story I started in January 2021 and didn't return to until October. I've also raised my daily writing goal from 300 words to 500. I've been doing 300 words a day for the last four years and it's time to kick it up a notch!

Currently Writing: Trying to meet my daily writing goal (300 words) while recovering from NaNoWriMo.

I'm really proud of myself for completing NaNoWriMo this year, but it took a lot out of me. To say the least I have been very humbled. I'm planning to take it easy the next couple of months and just hit my daily writing goal. So excited to write something different!
